CCL has carried out static load tests under cryogenic conditions on its XM Post-Tensioning systems. The tests were successfully completed and ETAG 013 certificate 07/0035 has been updated to cover the use of the system in cryogenic applications, including LNG tanks.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is created during a process which cryogenically cools natural gas to -162◦C, condensing it into liquid form and making it approximately 1/600th of its gaseous volume. This makes storage and transportation easier and more economical.
Stringent requirements govern the storage of LNG. Large double walled tanks are built to safely contain the gas. The outer walls of these structures are usually constructed from post-tensioned concrete in order to provide the additional strength and durability required.
As the consumption of (LNG) continues to increase around the world, the use of post-tensioning in cryogenic applications is becoming increasingly widespread. CCL XM systems are tested and approved to ETAG 013 under cryogenic conditions and will meet the most rigorous requirements of LNG tank construction.
