During construction of a new shopping mall in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the client wished to convert part of the structure originally designed to be used for parking, to a hypermarket. This called for strengthening works to be carried out on the ground floor raft, which had already been constructed before the need to modify the layout was identified.
Additional live loads which would be imposed on the floor slabs above the raft because of the change of use, had to be transferred to the ground slab through columns to be accommodated by the raft.
As building work was already at an advanced stage when the change of use was needed, a solution had to be found which would not in any way interfere with the building schedule of the mall and which could be completed within a very strict timescale.
CCL designed a solution which involved application of CFRP. After issuing shop drawings CCL carried out all strengthening works including supply and installation. An additional level of protection was applied to the CFRP to protect against heat which would be generated when new asphalt was laid on top of the CFRP.
