Following the installation of a new £25 million screw press at Bifranji’s Lincoln plant, voids were identified in the concrete beneath the steel baseplate. CCL was engaged to carry out the necessary void filling to ensure the integrity of the structure.
Bifranji are world leaders in closed die forging and finished machining of large crankshafts. Their Lincoln plant manufacturing capabilities include a percussion screw press, the first of its kind in the UK, capable of inducing 32,000 tonnes of pressure to form large parts including heavy plant crank shafts.
After construction of a 1,500 tonne spring-loaded press base, large voids were found in the concrete beneath the steel baseplate.
CCL used high-flow grout which was injected into the voids under low pressure to fill the voids effectively and ensure full encapsulation of any elements therein. As well as eliminating the voids, CCL’s solution was also designed to effectively stabilise the baseplate in order to combat any deflections which could be induced during operation and result in damage to the press.
Work was carried out nine metres below slab level in an area of restricted access.
