CROWN PLACE RESIDENCES, LIVERPOOL, UK

In order to create an access route for deliveries beneath a section of a student housing complex, CCL installed four post- tensioned transfer beams which support the levels above.

Crown Place is a £50 million student residency development for the University of Liverpool. The project consists of three blocks and is located in the city centre.

The company’s main objectives for this project were to reduce costs with savings in slab depth compared to the original reinforced concrete transfer beam option, produce longer spans and maximise floor to ceiling space. Faster floor-to-floor program cycles were achieved due to the removal of the majority of downstand beams.

CCL designed the suspended horizontal floor plates for ground + 7 floors of block two. The third floor of block three required four 20 m span post-tensioned transfer beams
to carry the levels above the access route for deliveries, as well as a one-way spanning post-tensioned slab. The company supplied and installed its XF post-tensioning system on site.

The incorporation of shower tray recesses was requested by the architect during construction. CCL engineers analysed the recess location and determined that it would not impact design. The company also carried out analysis to determine the shear stud requirements to the T-shaped columns.
