Karla Tower is Sweden’s tallest building, reaching 245 meters above ground and located in Gothenburg. This twisting architectural marvel features a unique design that seamlessly integrates both aesthetic appeal and structural innovation. The building’s intricate structure required advanced engineering solutions, including the implementation of vertical post-tensioning (PT) to ensure structural stability.
CHALLENGE
This project required advanced engineering to address significant stability challenges in its unique twisting design. Late changes in structural elements caused uplifting forces. The project faced stringent timelines, particularly for pouring, necessitating rapid design adjustments and material delivery. The core progressed a few floors ahead, requiring immediate installation of vertical tendons in the outskirt columns.
SOLUTION
To ensure structural integrity, the project scope included the execution of all post-tensioning (PT) activities. This involved
the installation, tensioning, and grouting of 10 tonnes of strands. The centrepiece of the project was the installation of 87-meter vertical CCL XV tendons, strategically placed in the outskirt columns. These tendons connected two outrigger slabs positioned several floors above and below the building’s distinctive twisted waist.
BENEFITS
- Seamless integration of design and construction phases
- Counteracted uplifting forces
- Ensured stability and resilience against dynamic wind loads
- Promoted architectural elegance and made it a landmark structure
