After originally quoting for 9,500 m2 of post-tensioned slabs for an administration building in the Khalifa Industrial Zone, Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), CCL entered into discussions with the client to propose a value-engineered solution for the entire project.
KIZAD is located equidistant between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE. The project encompasses 14 buildings, 425,000 m2 in area and four 4,000 m3 water tanks which will be built in three phases. CCL was commissioned to act as lead structural engineer and provide consultancy and specialized subcontracting works for the phase 1 of the project.
After receiving the structural drawings, CCL carried out feasibility studies to evaluate and analyse the potential of the project in relation to the needs of the client. Jointless slab on grade, expansion joints in the roof, lateral stability, foundations, soil compatibility and loadings were examined.
Once the concept was approved, CCL Engineering provided a detailed comprehensive structural design analysis. This included 3D modelling and construction drawings for piling layout, pile cap and raft foundations, vertical structures and horizontal structural elements, taking into consideration structural stability under seismic conditions.
As well as carrying out the prestressing works for the post-tensioned slabs, beams and columns, CCL carried out geotechnical engineering work and appropriate preparation of the subgrade to provide the optimum base for the slab on grade, which CCL also designed and executed.
A total of 160,000 m2 of post-tensioned jointless slab on grade was cast using a laser screed for accurate distribution of concrete and an ultra-flat surface to allow the creation of a high quality finish.
CCL’s specialized engineering added value to the project, reduced costs and delivered a safe, structural solution.
