SICKLA STATION HOUSE, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

Sickla Station House is a high-rise building located in southern Stockholm, constructed above the new metro station at Sickla. The building’s slender design and constrained base required a specialised approach to ensure structural stability and sustainability. CCL was brought in to implement vertical post-tensioning using CCL XV tendons and active CCL XM anchors, essential for managing the building’s tensile loads and optimising its design.

CHALLENGE

The primary challenge was the building’s slender profile, which needed to withstand significant wind-induced tensile loads while minimising its structural footprint. The construction method, using jump forms to build one floor per week, also presented difficulties in aligning post-tensioning ducts, due to the placement of climbing shoes. This misalignment posed potential risks to the efficiency of the post-tensioning system.

SOLUTION

CCL’s early involvement in the project allowed for the development of a sustainable solution that incorporated vertical post-tensioning. By installing and tensioning 38 tonnes of strand, the team introduced pre-compression into the core walls, reducing the wall thickness. Despite the alignment challenges, assessments showed that any friction losses were negligible, ensuring the building’s structural integrity was maintained.

BENEFITS

  • Structural Stability
  • Reduced CO2 Emissions
  • Faster Construction Schedule – 1 floor per week
  • Cost Savings – due to material reduction
