UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER, WILMOT CANCER CENTRE, NEW YORK, USA

The Wilmot Cancer Centre at the University of Rochester in the state of New York is a 140,000 sq ft (42,672 m2) cancer research institute.

The university and the project team opted for a bonded post-tensioning system, due to the high concentrated load and the requirement of the university to have the optimum flexibility to redefine the space at a later stage in the structure’s life.

The design called for a combination of a flat plate system with shallow beams under localised line loads. Each level was divided into four pours.

CCL and the engineer of record developed a special detailing for the construction joints to minimise the use of expensive couplers.

This approach saved the contractor money and time while maintaining the structural integrity of the building.

CCL was involved in the early stage of the construction process and worked with the engineer of record, Jensen Engineering, as well as the local construction team, to make sure the project was completed successfully and on schedule.

While the use of bonded systems in the building is not typical in the United States, CCL was chosen for its worldwide experience in those systems.

From design to job-site supervision, CCL provided experienced assistance to the project team and made sure that issues were dealt with quickly and efficiently to achieve the required project deadlines.
