As CCL’s work on the Qorsaita Bridge in Bqarsouna – North Lebanon continues, the company has been playing host to engineering students from the Lebanese American University (LAU) to enable them to witness the progress of the first balanced cantilever bridge being constructed in Lebanon.
The tour of the site was arranged in conjunction with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Lebanon section. After presentations by CCL employees, the students took part in a discussion about the practical and technical aspects of the bridge construction.
Students from other universities have also had the opportunity to visit the site including the Rafic Hariri University (RHU), Beirut Arab University (BAU) and the University of Balamand (UOB). A further visit has been organised this coming weekend for the American University of Beirut (AUB) and Notre Dame University (NDU).
The bridge is being built at a height of 400 m over the valley, cantilevering from both ends without the use of scaffolding. The incremental construction technique uses specially designed, hydraulically operated form travelers.
Upon completion, the bridge will improve commuting time between the 35 villages in the district. The new structure will be 100 metres long and will reduce the distance between Bqarsouna and Qorsaita from 12 km to 2.5 km for the area’s 100,000 inhabitants. Qorsaita Bridge is due to be completed by the end of 2018.
