CCL finds its bearings on Broughton Bypass

The new Broughton Bypass is designed to relieve congestion on the busy A6 north of Preston, in Lancashire UK.

The bypass was constructed by Hochtief (UK) Construction Ltd, who approached CCL to design and supply the bridge bearings for the Brooklands Bridge which is located at the south end of the bypass.

CCL supplied CE-marked elastomeric bearings and 450kN horizontal restraint bearings, designed and manufactured to European standards EN1337-3 and EN1337-8 respectively. The design of the horizontal restraint bearings included anchor plates which were cast into the precast beams off site. This enabled the bearings to be installed quickly and easily when they arrived on site and will also allow for easy removal of the bearings in future, should replacement be required.

It is hoped that the new bypass, which was opened to the public on 5th October 2017, will mean that traffic travelling through Broughton on the A6 Garstang Road will be reduced by up to 90%. The project is funded by the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal.
