New concept developed to speed up construction of curved structures

Danish post-tensioning (PT) specialist Skandinavisk Spændbeton, who recently became part of the CCL group of companies, and four other project partners, have received €1.3 million from the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation, to develop a new state-of-the-art and cost-efficient bridge concept called Pearl-Chain Reinforcement (PCR).

Along with Skandinavisk Spændbeton, project partners include Grontmij, Perstrup, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Abeo. The technology for PCR is based on the principles of Abeo’s Super-Light Structures, a patented-method of combining conventional and lightweight concrete, to create more cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly structures.

The new PCR system will enable faster construction of round and curved shapes without the need for costly moulds or scaffolding. This will dramatically reduce construction time from months to weeks, and cause minimal traffic disruption.

The system, which can be used both in buildings and infrastructure, works by wiring together a series of precast concrete units and stressing the PT strands until a curved structure is formed. The ends of the strands are then fixed with anchorages and the arch can be lifted into place.

As well as accelerating the construction process, PCR lasts longer, is easier to maintain, and uses less material than traditional construction methods, thereby reducing environmental impact.

In addition to carrying out the post-tensioning of test elements on the project, Spændbeton will be developing PCR stressing techniques, as well as those for handling and anchoring.
