Post-tensioning Lebanon’s tallest building

Construction has started on the long-awaited Sama Beirut project, a 50-storey tower located in the Sodeco region at the centre of Lebanon’s capital. At 186m, the building will be the tallest in the country.

CCL worked closely with the main designer to conceptualise the structure of the tower which features all post-tensioned slabs. The tower will be the first building in Lebanon to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating and the first in the Middle East to use XeD Extended Durability Post-Tensioning Systems pioneered by CCL.

As Sama Beirut is intended to form a landmark structure, the project team wanted a building system with high standards of durability to withstand the country’s harsh environment, while still providing an efficient, eco-friendly and economical method of construction. With close cooperation between all parties, CCL delivered the optimal slab solution, using its XeD Extended Durability System to meet all of the specified requirements. The CCL XeD System is a recent development in post-tensioning tailored specifically towards durability which incorporates anti-corrosive ducts and special encapsulated accessories.

From a structural perspective, challenges included bad soil conditions, differential column shortening and the need for environmental efficiency. CCL’s solution achieved a lighter structure, reducing vertical elements and foundations size, smart detailing, and the lowest rate of carbon emission and embodied energy for the building’s construction.

CCL is proud to be part of the Sama Beirut project, which has an expected completion date of 2014.
