In another change of use refurbishment project CCL carried out modifications to a shopping mall at one of Kuwait’s largest waterfront retail and leisure destinations. The mall’s 100,000m2 of retail space includes 360 separate stores.
CCL was engaged to assess the impact of the desired changes at the development and propose any remedial measures necessary to accommodate them. Having undertaken the original post-tensioning of the structure CCL was able to carry out the evaluation quickly and efficiently while ensuring the requirement for additional strengthening measures was minimised.
Changes included new openings to existing concrete slabs and additional loadings which would have structural impact on slabs, beams and columns. CCL combined several strengthening techniques including the use of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates and wraps, external post-tensioning and the addition of concrete sections.
